prada

i somehow keep catching the same few movies from the past seven years in repeats on cable.  thankfully, they are films that i like.  one that's been in pretty heavy rotation on the hbo networks is the devil wears prada.  with each additional viewing, i find more and more to love — in particular, all the little touches that make emily blunt's performance so brilliant.

still, the best exchange in the movie continues to be the following:

MIRANDA:  oh, no, you chose.  you chose to get ahead.  you want this life?  those choices are necessary.

ANDY:  but what if this isn't what i want?  i mean, what if i don't want to live the way you live?

MIRANDA:  oh, don't be ridiculous, andrea.  EVERYBODY wants this.  EVERYBODY wants to be us.

i watched prada for the first time in a chelsea theater full of gay men.  after hearing these lines, the audience burst into applause.

buffy season 8

my, how i've missed these characters.  the fact that joss whedon is writing the dialogue just makes everything so much better.

covers by jo chen — fabulous.  interior art — not so great.  would love to see what karl moline (the artist for the fray limited series) could do with these characters.  still, just happy to have 'em back.

hot fuzz

can't believe it took me so long to get around to watching hot fuzz, and now i'm totally wishing i'd seen it in theaters.

from the same creative team as shaun of the dead, the hyper/extreme camera angles and sound effects for everyday, mundane actions seem to be put to much better use here.  simon pegg is amazing, especially when contrasted with his portrayal of shaun in their last film.

loving the references to various action flicks and television cop dramas are fantastic.  also, the fact that the movie reads as both a love story as a buddy film — yeah, that works for me.  rockin' good time.

pardon the interruption

mike wilbon on pardon the interruption

back in may, i started listening to the podcast of the tony kornheiser show on washington post radio.  kornheiser has since left the show temporarily as he is now traveling for monday night football.

i tried listening to the radio program after tony's departure, but the show is just not doing it for me anymore — no disrespect to david burd and the rest of the crew — and so, despite my lack of general sports interest, i've started watching pti to get my mr. tony fix.

the other day, i saw kornheiser and wilbon do their regular "role play" segment and was nearly crying from laughter.  the highlight (pictured above) was tony grilling wilbon as steve smith about smith's listing "the notebook" among his favorite movies.  the whole scenario is so absurd but the two hosts, who clearly have great chemistry, are able to riff well together.

i'm a little sad that i haven't watched this show in the past six years that it has been around.  these guys are great!

happy birthday, alex!

monick and alex
the fuddruckers on rockville pike, july 1993

alex, monick and i went to high school together, and the two of them attended mcgill after graduation.  i'm still amazed at how much the three of us would laugh every time we got together.  i miss these guys!

wishing alex and his family all the best!  happy birthday, xandu!

happy uncles

not having a car of our own gave joe and me an excuse to ride in the back seat with our little niece.  i love the fact that maddy's socks look like little chinese slippers.

joe and maddy

madeleine took a real shine to joe.  he insists that he has a way with babies.  i keep telling him that's because he's round like one.

happy birthday, chris!

this picture of christine and her husband shelley is from our visit to martha's vineyard last august.  martha's vineyard is like provincetown, only straight and on an island!

happy birthday to my good friend christine!  your gifts — another lashonhara production — is in the mail!

maddy

my beautiful little niece, now nearly four months old.  i can't believe how much she has changed in such a short time.  apparently, babies do that.
