May 22, 2006patti in concerti went to see patti lupone perform at lincoln center tonight at a braodway cares/equity fights aids fundraiser which also doubled as a promo for her new album, the lady with the torch. i've loved patti since i discovered she not only played a mother who gave up a career as a performer on life goes on but was also, in real life, a broadway star. i can't count the number of times chris and i have laughed over the forbidden broadway parody of her by toni dibuono, which captures every ridiculous nuance of patti's singing style. classic. ms. lupone didn't perform any of the stuff she's known for (e.g., anything goes or evita), just the songs from her new album. i didn't know most of the material but she managed, in her trademark fashion, to make it incredibly entertaining; her rendition of "who's sorry now" brought down the house. still, as much as i love her, i was disappointed that, aside from a vague "we all know why we're here," she didn't name or acknowledge bc/efa on stage, despite the fact that their staff organized and produced the entire event. i expect my divas to be a little classier than that.
