the three's company mix

the above is perhaps one of my all-time favorite possessions.  well, actually, it's the cover to one of my favorite possessions — the very first mix my friend chris made for me and chava, ten (!!!) years ago.

the songs on this mix bring me back to my senior year of college and the period just after i graduated.  god, the things we found funny back then — japanese accents, coolio, the (new) mickey mouse club, jekyll and hyde, and college a cappella.  does it mean something that i still find most of it funny today?  chris also has a knack for finding some of the coolest bands and songs i never would have listened to on my own — sebadoh, the breeders, pizzicato five, ella fitzgerald, my life with the thrillkill cult.  she has definitely influenced my taste in music for the better.  (my love for teen-pop is purely my own.)

one of the nice (or frustrating, depending) aspects of audio cassette mixes is the way they pretty much force me to listen to them straight through from beginning to end.  in this day of cd's and mp3's, i'm so used to skipping songs, shuffling orders, and customizing playlists.  sure, tapes can be fast-forwarded, but doing so means i have to guess where to stop, press play to check how far i've gone, and more than likely rewind, stop and press play again just to find the beginning of the next friggin' song!  and, really, who can be bothered...?

anyway, this definitely falls under the "things i love" category.
